I build Halgo, and I still teach — which is the only reason it works the way it does. Every part of it started as something I was doing by hand on a weeknight.

It began with homework. A student's practice should come out of the book they are already working from, at the level they are actually at, on the thing they got wrong last week — not from a generic exercise bank that has never met them. Doing that properly takes about half an hour per student, which is why most of us stop doing it properly.

The rest grew backwards from there. Boards, scheduling, packages and balances are in Halgo because a homework tool that does not know when the lesson was, or whether it was paid for, is not much use on a Tuesday evening.

Halgo is in closed beta. The features pages say which parts are live and which are not, and the comparison pages say who should stay with the tool they already have. I would rather lose a signup than have somebody arrive expecting something that is not there yet.

Halgo is tutor management software that also builds each student’s homework from the tutor’s own textbooks. A private tutor’s practice runs on a calendar, a spreadsheet of who has paid, a folder of PDFs, and the half-hour after the lesson spent turning one of those PDFs into homework for one particular student. Halgo connects them.
